Environmental Fees

Okay guys here's the thing. You buy a computer or some high end tech device and you're also charged a so-called "Environmental Fee". I get the idea, i truly do. The environmental fee is to help the state (penalize the buyer) dispose of your heavily plastic encrusted technology or melt it down for recycling. I don't actually agree with this but i can get with it even though I don't share in any of the revenues they derive from re-selling the recycled materials. Having said that, that's not my beef. My beef is with my hair dresser.
I went to get my monthly follicle trimming with my hair dresser I've known for years. As i do once every 6 months as well, I picked up a small (read: sickly expensive) hair gum to use to shape the do the way i like. Bought the stuff, paid the bill - tipped on the total amount of the bill - didn't want to jip my gal for her good service, you know - then stared in disbelief at the receipt as i walked out the door. There on the bill was an environmental fee of $2 showing up out of nowhere. An environmental fee for what? The tiny jar of hair gum? The one that when it's used up, i can rinse out and throw into my home's recycling blue box??? Are you fucking kidding me? Oh, and they charged GST on that environmental fee as well. So without any explanation from the front desk clerk taking my money i got to pay an extra $2.10 (enough for a Starbucks or McD's coffee, I might add). Why the fuck am I paying an environmental fee on a hair product? If i went to Walmart or Safeway or any other big grocery chain would I be paying such a fee? What the hell for? I know it's only $2.10 but it's the principle of the matter - I don't like paying a seemingly insignificant amount of tax for something that is just window dressing for extra government taxes. And my hair dresser wonders why she can never sell me product - it's not that it's just too expensive, I'm not interested in paying lame extra government taxes that don't do anything other than line their pockets and empty mine.
When are we going to cut this nonsense out? I sure hope this October when the scandal clad Trudeau government is tossed from office. Now, I'd pay an environmental fee to see that happen sooner.
